“It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but words can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it.”

-John Berger Ways of Seeing

Seeing Through Film is a newsletter written and edited by myself, Thomas Flight. I’m a critic, writer, and filmmaker who is best known for my video essays about Film, TV, and media that I publish on YouTube, and Nebula.

In this newsletter you’ll find a lot of writing about cinema as a medium and the craft of filmmaking, but my larger interest is in exploring our relationship to all visual media. I’m fascinated by the way media forms a sort of landscape for our day to day lives in the hypermodern world I think understanding how this media works, how it’s made, and how it shapes the way we see the world is vital to understanding the world we live in today.

“There is no inevitability, so long as there is a willingness to contemplate what is happening.”

-Marshall McLuhan
